Looking Back And Ahead On Music Biz Besties

Looking Back And Ahead On Music Biz Besties

It wasn’t too long ago that I remember feeling like I had nowhere to turn for music business advice or inspiration. I didn’t have a “tribe” of peers to hang out with or to celebrate successes with. And most of all I was tired of feeling like the music industry was competitive, because I truly believe that there is power in working together and lifting each other up!

Maybe you too know that feeling?

That’s exactly why I started Music Biz Besties.

I honestly had no idea what the group would become when I started it, I just knew that I needed to surround myself with other young women pursuing their passion for music. I really thought I’d be lucky to have a small community of 30. But here we are a little over a year later with over 2,600 members.

2,600. Clearly I wasn’t the only one who felt like this community was missing!

Even though we don’t all know each other personally, I feel like together we now share a similar mission to encourage and lift one another up… share advice and honest feedback… and become a positive force of women in the industry.

Now, multiply all that by 2,600. That’s powerful.

2017 was the year of fueling this community. Getting you excited to collaborate… creating a space that allows you to be vulnerable and ask for help… celebrating how amazing each one of you truly are... and letting you the see power in what can happen when we all come together!

But in planning for 2018, I realized that I wanted to give you more. You’ve told me that you want to find or create that dream job, to become more independent as a musician, to learn more about different aspects of the industry, to make more money… more, more, more!

So that’s what Music Biz Besties is going to do this year… give you more!

First let’s talk about what’s already in place.

  1. Facebook group! This is where it all started. Like I said, I thought 30 members would be a game changer, but by day 4 there were already over 300 members! In 2017 we welcomed over 2,000 new Besties and the vibes in the group continue to inspire me on a daily basis!

  2. When I launched the Facebook group and saw how women were joining from all over the world, I quickly decided we needed a Bestie Directory. So for about a month and a half I collected applications for Bestie Profiles and launched the Music Biz Besties website last January (2017) to feature individual profiles of all who applied. Still today, the purpose of the directory is for you to search for women in your city or cities you’re traveling to, or to find Besties to hire, or to co-write with, or whatever! There are hundreds of Besties listed on the site and new profiles being added every week.

  3. Almost immediately after launching the website, I came up with the idea to create a Job Forum. The job forum has grown in viewers and subscribers, recently changed to a new layout, and continues to be the most popular part of the site!

  4. There were also 10 Nashville Meetups in 2017 along with various meetups in other cities including London, New York, and Austin! I’ve loved getting to know a lot of you on a personal level at these meetups and am excited to share what I’ve got planned for meetups this year.

  5. Over the summer, I started an interview series called Bestie Chats. These live interviews happened in the Facebook group and featured Besties from all over the world who work in various facets of the industry. I put the Bestie Chats on hold in the fall, but am planning for Season 2 to be next level, and start again soon!

Y’all we’ve accomplished a lot in one year!!

So, 2018. I’m excited to finally share what’s coming up…

  1. Last week I started an official Music Biz Besties Instagram account. You may know that my company is called Designing the Row, and a lot of you are following me there… but the Designing the Row account is for me to share what I’m doing in business - which occasionally involves MBB, but the new Besties Instagram is for you. It’s not about me. The purpose is to add inspiration to your feed, feature all that you’re doing, share upcoming Bestie events, and allow this community to continue the conversation on Instagram.

  2. Also new is this Bestie Blog! I've noticed a lot of questions in the Facebook group go unnoticed - and not because they’re not good questions, but because the answer isn’t always easy to sum up in a quick FB comment. So the new blog is to be a resource for you to learn… but also a place where I can feature you and your music or business… as well as a place to share about this crazy music lifestyle we live.

  3. While the meetups aren’t new, I’m planning to uplevel these events. It’s been a fun year of hanging out for happy hour, but if this is the year of “more” - the meetups need to get on that level too. That’s all I’ll share for now, but be on the lookout for more meetup info coming soon.

  4. And finally, what I’m most excited to share with you is the Bestie Membership!! The Facebook group, Job Forum, Bestie Directory, and blog - all free. But if you want to up-level your career, you’ve got to put in the work. Becoming a successful person starts with you. And the Bestie Membership will challenge you to push through your comfort zones and take action! We all have ideas, but actually acting on those ideas is the hard part, right? Every month the Bestie Membership resources will encourage you to focus on different topics to help give you a new perception and empower you to go after what you want!
